1. Soaking and Germinating F1 Cucumber Seeds
After purchasing, soak the F1 cucumber seeds in warm water (50–52°C) for 3–4 hours to stimulate germination. Then, rinse the seeds and wrap them in a damp cloth for 24–36 hours until they sprout.
Seeds are considered ready when the root length reaches about one-third of the seed length.
2. Preparing Seedling Trays and Sowing Seeds
To prepare seedling trays for F1 cucumbers, mix fine soil, organic compost, and superphosphate at a 40–60–15 ratio. Use specialized seedling trays, black plastic bags, or banana leaves as containers. Be sure to sterilize the growing medium to prevent fungal diseases and pests.
Once seeds begin sprouting, sow one seed per tray/cell, cover with a thin layer of soil and straw, and maintain consistent moisture to support root development.
3. Caring for Seedlings
Growing F1 cucumbers requires careful seedling care to ensure healthy mature plants. Once sprouts emerge, remove the straw layer and keep the medium consistently moist. If seedlings appear weak, apply diluted NPK 15-15-15 solution. Before transplanting to the field, spray preventive treatments for common diseases like root rot and powdery mildew.
4. Soil Preparation and Raised Beds
Soil for F1 cucumbers must be well-prepared—cleared of weeds and organic residues, and enriched with basal fertilizer. Create raised beds about 1–1.5 meters wide and 20–30 cm high. Leave 40 cm spacing between beds.
5. Trellising and Mulching
After bed preparation, construct A-frame trellises using bamboo, wood, or mesh for plant support. Insert one stake per plant and tie the plant gently with soft string. Finally, cover the beds with agricultural mulch film, cutting small holes for each plant. This helps control weeds and reduces nutrient competition.
6. Transplanting Seedlings
When seedlings have 1–2 true leaves, transplant them to the beds. Plant in two rows per bed with 50 cm spacing between plants, achieving about 31,000 plants per hectare.
Before planting, dip seedlings in 0.2% Ridomil 72WP or Benlate C solution for 2–3 minutes to prevent fungal diseases. Transplant early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Handle the seedlings gently when removing them from the tray to avoid damaging the roots.
